Spin Fishing summary of the 2018 season by Michał Jandura. Part 2 of 3 – the perch

In another part of my summary of the 2018 season, I would like to focus on a fish that last year I fell for – hopefully it did fell for me as well. Perch – as this is the fish that we are talking about here; at first sight easy to catch, tends to act cleverly and cunningly and that often makes it impossible catch. Despite that, 2018 in my case abounded with heaps of large and great looking perches. That made me feel rather optimistic about the strategy, that I developed, that allowed me to catch them.

Such a strategy consists of many different factors that have to coexist peacefully together. First on the list is the spot. Perches feel best in places covered with weeds, with a sophisticated bottom. Second point is dedicated to a proper equipment and lures that will stimulate those little chancers to act.

THE ROD
Theoretical grounds of perch fishing that I tend to apply, differ a bit from the usual patterns. Even though the general recommendation for perch fishing is to use more delicate rods, I decided to go for one with a bigger casting weight – up to 15 g. Kamisori Perch that I chose is effectively nothing more, than a sabre for a heavier lure. Quick rod with a very well profiled blank, that – despite its stiff construction, bends in ¾ of its length and allows perch hauling without worrying about losing them. For such a high casting weight, the rod is really sensitive, so there are no issues with sensing vibrations of spoons sized 0 and 1. Some may say that for such lures, there are rods with lower casting weights; yet I am trying to be, despite amount of equipment available, a versatile angler. While going to a fishing trip, you never actually know what will you catch – even if it is caught as a bycatch. Universal equipment that allows to angle both in a sophisticated and more aggressive manner, grants peace of mind in case of a contact with a bigger fish. Each year I am getting more certain that it is worth to look for versatility while angling. Kamisori Perch provides such a versatility and the peace of mind that comes from it.

THE REEL
My perfect perch set is armed with the Black Crystal 1005FD reel. Sturdiness and power of that model convinced me so much, that I decided to get equipped with all available sizes of that reel. Black Crystal stands out with its duralumin made body, rotor gear that was made with stiff dural alloys, Japanese ceramic bearing ball and multi-disc braking system. Product as a whole has adequate design. Black matte coating with aluminium, varnished spool that stands out as the only element, catches an eye of every angler met. Aggressive look and high-specs make perfect combination that delivers at the fishery at any time, not only when angling for perch.

THE LURES
Choosing a right lure is always a broad topic – as broad as the selection of available options. Last season for me, meant also a bit of digging through different lures for those cunny perches. In order not to focus on all lures that I had a chance to lay my hands on while chasing perches, I will only share the most effective ones with you.
First one – and my favourite at the same time, is the Speedo. Soft lure of an inconspicuous shape, slender, ribbed, with a delicate tail. The tail, despite its small dimensions, works very quickly and narrowly, attracting even the most stubborn fish. The ribbed body adds vibrations. It is worth to add that Speedo lures are soaked with a shrimp scented attractor that increases their effectiveness.

Second one – used by me with great results, many times last season, while angling for perches, is the Saira swallow-tailed lure. Perches were just swallowing it whole (pun intended;-)), no matter the size used. Saira is a slender lure with unique softness. Its biggest advantage, as I see it, is its diversity when it comes to arming. No matter the length of a hook, action of the lure remains the same. It is possible due to a, mentioned before – soft structure.

The most effective colours of the lures described, that manged to attract the most of perches last season at my fisheries, were: 360,359,381,371,i 349

As I said at the beginning, perches are really cunny fish, that requires well-thought and well-planned strategy to be caught. It has to be based on analysis of attempts and mistakes and on observation. Summing up the 2018 season in perspective of perch fishing, I can tell you that I managed to reach positive conclusions from those analysis, as it abounded with many spectacular fish, that were not caught as a bycatch, but on purpose, as an effect of aware actions. In that topic I would like to emphasise once again how important it is to choose a right gear, carefully selected both in terms of the kind of a fish and in terms of a pattern of its behaviour.

I wrote one more, the last, summary of the season 2018 in a similar manner – this time in perspective of zander fishing.

You know the saying: the mechanism is only that strong as is its weakest part? In the Black Crystal range we managed to limit the chance of having "weakest part" to "0". No nasty surprises during fishing trips. Incredibly strong, duraluminium body is the basis here. Dural has also been used to produ...

Saira

Previously used mainly for drop-shotting, this lure type is now used in a variety of ways - with a jig head, or in vertical jigging. What makes the Saira so successful is the ribbed body. It also possesses a cut underside, so it can be fished with an offset hook.

This lure, like the Nihonto, also possesses a ribbed body, it is however slimmer and has a longer tail section, so while it is not as aggressive, the action is really natural. During testing especially the smaller size proved to be a real winner with perch.
