Trout at the beginning of a season are quite a challenge actually. Attempt to catch such a fish during winter is much different from the same activity during spring or summer. Cold water, short time since spawning, weight loss and much harder access to the food comparing to other parts of the season make every single catch twice as pleasant. In order to increase your chances for great moments and successful fishing trip, you need a proper preparation.
Throughout the years, all you could see by the sides of the trout infested rivers, were quite long rods, sturdy, with middle deflection. Last seasons brought quite a few changes to the game though; more and more frequently we can actually notice anglers using shorter and more delicate rods. Those new tools gave us new ways to present soft lures, small wobblers and micro-spoons. Lures that during this particular period can deliver some large, difficult to catch fish.
The most interesting rod for such use is the Katsudo Slim. You can purchase it in one of three length versions – that means you can adjust to any trout river conditions possible.
The trout reel should be reliable and should have a proper brake. Its weight should correspond to the rod and together they should create an extension of your palm. Spooling quality is also crucial – especially if you decide to use a braid.
Along with the change of a trout rod, a change of a trout line came through. More and more frequently the braid is being used. Its durability, lack of extensibility and more control over the rig allow more aware and more effective angling. If possible, it is best to choose a vividly coloured braid – that will help you to control the lure in much more precise manner while angling nearby the reeds. That’s where the biggest predators live, after all.
If you decide to use a braid, a fluorocarbon leader of 0.16 to 0.22 diameter would be a great addition. It acts as sort of suspension that protects the line from sudden abrasion, since its uniform construction and hard shell have much lower abrasion coefficient.
Trout lures tend to imitate the organisms that are being consumed by those predators. Therefore, in your toolbox you should have some wobblers remaining small fish such as gudgeons, three-spined sticklebacks and smaller trout. Those last ones make quite a big part of the trout menu both at the beginning of the season and at the end of it.
It is also handy to have lures remaining some smaller organisms. Good imitation of a white maggot or a tiny crayfish, armed with a light jig-head, can open the water when other lures fail.
True revolution of the recent seasons for me are small spoons. Their twinkly action visible during steady spooling, possibility to use the current of a river to transfer the lure from one bank to another and unique action while dropping allow you to adjust to any situation there is.
I cannot imagine trout fishing without polarised glasses. I tend to pick models with slightly dimmed, brown lenses. They are the most versatile and they do not take away as much light as the black ones.
Vast majority of trout rivers require use of a landing net. In order to have one serving you for a long time, you should choose a model with a rubber coated net that does not absorb odours and is hardly damageable by a treble hook. The most convenient way to carry the landing net is to attach it to your back with a magnetic clip.
HOW TO ANGLE?
This paragraph is placed at the end on purpose. Winter is a time when, in my opinion, there are no rules to follow. Both locations of fish and their preferences are so variable that attempt to make any rules, or to angle with in a memorized way may outcome with lack of contact with a fish. The only proper way is to angle as much as possible in every single spot, where you expect trout to be or even in the spot where you would not think fish would exist. You need to try different lures and maintain silence – trout are extremely vigilant and easy to scare. That is why it is so important to adjust the rig properly as, except for all the other factors mentioned above, it will maximise your chances to catch a beautiful brow trout.
