In the era of incredible innovation in fishing tackle we can finally choose the perfect lure for any body of water.
Years ago, back when I was just starting out spin fishing, there was much less to choose from. We had twisters, rippers, maybe a few spoons but not much else. Some of us didn’t have a good zander rod or braided line. There was little available in the way of tackle specifically dedicated to zander fishing but there were more big fish in the water. Today, the angling pressure is enormous and it takes the perfect lure to catch a medal-winning fish.
In popular bodies of water the fish learn to recognize lures just a few days into the season. Especially the ones used by many anglers. They associate them with danger. That’s why it’s crucial to keep trying new products.
My absolute favourite in the 2017 season has been Saira.
At first glance it seems to be a standard swallow but Mikado added a few touches that make it much better than anything else on the market. It has a powerful shrimp scent and is saturated with salt, which the fish really love.
It’s corrugated, so it looks more enticing as it’s dropping to the bottom. Mikado left some room for an offset hook so you can fish between underwater obstacles. The lures are available in a wide range of colors and sizes so anyone can find exactly what they need. The Saira works just as well for other types of fish such as perch, trout and pike.
I have been using swallow lures for many years and I always have some in my tackle box. Many other anglers use them as well so fish are already familiar with some models. That’s why it’s so important to keep trying new ones. The texture and scent set our lure apart. You can use it for various techniques.
My favourite one is, of course, the classic jig head but when the small zander move to deeper water you need to use a smaller size I switch to drop shot. Many times throughout the season Saira proved to be the only thing that worked. Other than zander and perch I also used it to catch pike – the three biggest ones I got this season.
To sum up, I really believe that Saira is one of the flagship products from Mikado. You need to try it – I’m sure that in the future it will be labeled a Legend, just as the Fishunter is now.
See you on the water,
